CA Hunt & Fish Guide

Regulations, seasons, licenses

An independent, unofficial reference for California hunting and fishing regulations, for people who would rather check than guess. It is an iPhone app, and it is not on the App Store yet.

Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or the State of California.

The California Code of Regulations and Fish and Game Code, as published by the State, are the legal authority. This app is informational only and is not legal advice. Always verify with CDFW before you go.

Every rule shows its source

Every value shows the official source it came from, its citation, and the date it was checked. When something is not published yet, the app says so instead of guessing.

What is in it

Fishing

  • Per-water regulations for hundreds of California waters, plus statewide defaults
  • Ocean regulations by area, with per-species size and bag limits
  • Marine Protected Areas with each area's take rules, quoted and cited
  • Operated lakes with permits, hours and stocking data

Hunting

  • Deer zones with seasons, quotas, tag classes and validity
  • Bear, wild pig, elk, pronghorn and bighorn
  • Waterfowl, upland game birds and small game
  • Legal shooting hours, and where you may and may not shoot
  • Big Game Drawing planner with the dates that cost money if you miss them

Spearfishing

Entry points, conditions, per-spot legality, structure charts, dive log.

Maps

Waters, lakes, MPAs, deer and waterfowl zones, public land, BLM and Forest Service land, weather alerts, water quality, topo and depth charts. The maps are a reference drawing, not a navigation instrument. The regulations and boundaries are on the device and open with no signal; weather, tides, elevation, water quality, topo and depth need a connection.

Your documents

Track the licenses, tags, report cards and courses you hold. The app knows both clocks — a hunting license runs July through June, a fishing license 365 days from purchase — and tracks report-card returns, harvest reporting and hunter education. It tells you what you are missing.

Your records are stored on your iPhone, not on any server of ours — we never receive them. This app is not valid proof of license in the field; only CDFW's own app or your physical documents count.
